Narcissus / Daffodil

Narcissus (Narcissi) (often called a daffodil) is the botanic name for a genus of mainly hardy, mostly spring-flowering, bulbs in the Amaryllidaceae family. They are native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia.

We've all heard of Daffodil, Narcissus, Jonquil. Let’s settle the names first. The official botanical name of the whole genus is Narcissus. Daffodil is the commonly known name.  Jonquil is a “species name” within the Narcissus genus. This means that certain daffodils are called Narcissus jonquilla. Some people, particularly in the Southern states of the United States, use Jonquil as a common name for the whole genus, but it’s really the species name for a minor group having multiple smaller flowers on each stem. So when you’re using the common name, all colors, sizes and types are Daffodils. If you get into the botanical or Latin names, they all begin with Narcissus (the “genus”) and end with a different “species” name.

Between Mohammed and the 16th Centry, daffodils were relegated to the wild and were essentially forgotten. However, around or about 1629 a group of Englishmen took the daffodil out of the weeds and put it into the garden. Daffodils were in favor again. But the early English gardens contained mostly herbs, including roses, vegetables, and flowering bulbs. Hyacinths, and peonies were popular in those gardens, but became less important with the introduction of the Tulip. At one period in history there were hundreds of varieties of Hyacinths, but today there are hardly ten that still survive in any one country.

All Narcissus varieties contain the alkaloid poison lycorine, mostly in the bulb but also in the leaves.

水仙 / スイセン

スイセン属（-ぞく、学名：Narcissus）は、ヒガンバナ科（クロンキスト体系ではユリ科）の属のひとつ。

この属にはラッパスイセンやニホンズイセンなど色や形の異なる種や品種が多くあるが、この属に含まれるものを総称してスイセンと呼んでいる。多年草で、冬から春にかけて白や黄の花を咲かせるものが多い。原産地は主にスペイン、ポルトガルを中心に地中海沿岸地域、アフリカ北部まで広がり、原種は 30種類ほど知られている。

狭義には学名Narcissus tazettaや、その変種であるニホンズイセン（Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis）をスイセンということも多い。しかし、本記事では特に明記しない限り「スイセン」をスイセン属の総称の意味で用いる。

有毒植物で毒成分はリコリン( lycorine )とシュウ酸カルシウム( calcium oxalate ) など。全草が有毒だが、鱗茎に特に毒成分が多い。スイセンの致死量は10gである。食中毒症状と接触性皮膚炎症状を起こす。

現在日本ズイセンと呼ばれているものは室町時代～安土桃山時代に中国から渡来したといわれています。スイセンは世界中で親しまれている植物のひとつで50種の原種とそれからなる1万種以上の園芸品種があります。特にヨーロッパでの栽培の歴史は古く300年前から品種改良が行われていたという記録があります。非常にバラエティーに富んでおり花の形状などから英国王立協会により12の系統に分類されています。この分類が世界的な基準となっています。
